Would it rub? Empty
PostSubject: Would it rub?   Would it rub? EmptyTue May 17 2011, 21:50

Hey. My audi is lowred 30mm all round and im looking at some new wheels 18"x8j with 225/40 tyres, i was thinking of puttin 20mm spacers on the rear, or even 25mm to make it look more "lean" but not sure if it will rub on the arches :S
So if anyone has done this or knows anything about it, much help wld be appreciated Smile
Cheers!

Do you know the size and offset of the old wheels and also of the new wheels? Width means nothing it's all in the offset and tyre size.

Get those and it should be easy to work out

Ok so;

The new wheels will be 2mm closer to your inner arch and 2mm further in your wheel arch from the outside.

With 20mm spacers (final offset ET15) your wheel face will be 18mm further out than your current wheel
With 25mm spacers (final offset ET10) your wheel face will be 23mm further out than your current wheel

Get a tape measure and measure from the current wheel face and see how much clearance you have.

The tyre size you have has no stretch at all, there may be a bit of catching as the tyre sidewall is going to be vertical or slightly bloated. I dont know how low 30mm is on an A3 with 18's. so you may not need a stretch.

I was running 195/45 on my 8J and I was low and catching (alot more than 30mm but my final offset loww) For 8J a 195/40 would be ideal for me.

But it depends on how much the wheel comes out after spacers so measure up and see how much you can play with.

Does that make sense? I tend to waffle on a bit

It really is personal choice.

If it is 15mm now from wheel face to outside arch lip the spacers will give you these positions on the new wheel;

With 10mm spacers (final offset ET25) your wheel face will be -6mm inside your wheel arch
With 15mm spacers (final offset ET20) your wheel face will be -1mm inside your wheel arch
With 20mm spacers (final offset ET15) your wheel face will be 4mm outside your wheel arch
With 25mm spacers (final offset ET10) your wheel face will be 8mm outside your wheel arch

So it depends how much you want them sticking out Smile anything on or outside of the wheel arch may need stretched tyes.

Edit: handy calculator here clicky

no problem mate.

Yes you will need to get something stretched, a 195/45 will still be comfortable and give extra clearance, a 195/40 is what a few would say is perfect. Again personal choice.

Bumps and weight are all things that will make them rub, I don't think your that low on 18's tho. My mate has 17's on the rear of his A3 which are 9J and 10mm outside the arch, he is down 40mm and doesnt get rubbing and has a slight stretch 215/45 i think.

There is no rule where you can just say it will or won't rub it depends on tyre size, weight, suspension setup, wheel position. You could probably make a standard A3 rub if you filled it fat chip eating birds from Rhyl.

A good way to test (the ghetto way) is to get the wheels then jam something the same thickness as the spacers in between the wheel and the hub. look by eye and see where it sits then get the spacers and tyres to suit.

Yea they are expensive.

It's also always worth investing in coilovers as you can get the ride height spot on and less chance of rubbing if you set them right.

have you tried rimstlye? they will fit the tyres you want. Or maybe find them without tyres and get some seperate.

As the wheels are the same width front and back I would try to fit the same size tyre all round otherwise it will look wrong.

lol, if your trying to do something different there is usually a bit of messing about to make sure it's right.

That's why alot of people copy what someone else has done and then it doesn't require thinking.

I still haven't got my BBS right after nearly 2 years lol. Been through 2 sets of custom made adaptors, need to do the whole lot again.
Thats what I get for fitting Merc PCD wheels with low ET to a mk3 golf I guess
