I have never done this boys and girl's all information here are some i have gathered of the internet. Hope this will help some of you who is considering doing a bit of d.i.y trim spraying.

Take your plastic trip off and sand them down untill the dimple effect on the plastic has disappeared.

Use a low number grit paper
(40 or 80 grit wet'n'dry)

Once you are happy that the dimple effect has gone, use 320 grit and start to get a good smooth finish for the primer. The higher the grit the smoother they will be.

Once you are happy that the plastic is smooth, and you can run your hands over them and its just smooth plastic you are ready to prime.

Take white spirits and clean the plastic, making sure there is no dust or moisture on the surface.

Priming:
Use high build primer on the plastic, spray 1 good coat onto the surface of the plastic. when this drys, you will be able to see any areas that u missed when sanding / flattening down. Sand any areas u missed.

Now repeat this process, 1 big coat of high build primer, this will allow u to see if its perfectly smooth. You might even find that the primer is lumpy, this also needs fixing, do that by sanding with 320 grit.

Add more coats of primer until the surface is perfect, this is called your 'preperation'. This is the most important part of anything getting painted on a car, it makes the difference between a good or bad job.

Once you are happy with the primed surface add 1 coat of paint and let it dry. Dont allow it to run, so be quick with the strokes, if it runs, you need to let it dry and sand it off and coat in primer again.

When you have got it right the paint will dry smoothly on to the primer.

You want about 3 coats of paint, allow each coat to dry and make your last coat's a good 1.

After this we are going to laquer, which is simple. Just copy what you did with the base colour, but remeber kids dont go to think with the lacquer, i will run..

Top Tip: HEAT THE CAN If you use cold laquer it will dry white on the paint. Don't put too much on at a time, 2 coats is fine but let it dry between coats.

320 grit - I'd recommend something waay lower than that... I used 1200 between coats, and 600 - 800 on primer. Smile

its use 400 to 500 on the trim before priming or the trims will get fury finish on them and use 800 to 1000 on the primer so you dont see scracthes in the paint finish this is only if your using aerosol paint

tbh aerosol is never a good colour match and if you love your motor wouldnt bother because it doesnt last long so youll have to redo them every 6to12 months

done it before on my first car
and im a sprayer

I agree - aerosols are crap!... Halfords made up ones in store are even worse! Ends up in tears lol Razz

And yeah - I also agree with you on the colour match - did my wing mirrors, they're not fantastic if you're a perfectionist in colourmatch, I managed to do a good job, but they're not spot on...
