Any welders here?

Can anyone here weld alloy? I managed to crack the sump on my Transporter today, need it fixed asap!

your sump shouldnt be alloy in all honesty are you shure??

i can weld but alloy is a nightmare tbqf

Loads of cars have alloy sumps nowadays mate !

The one on my passat has ground away nicely - its nearly up to the sump plug.

yer, the alloy sometimes is finned and helps dissipate the heat absorbed into the oil.

as far as welding i suppose it can be done, but youd have to find someone with a TIG - only thing is once a crack has started in alloy its quite hard to stop it, say for example you weld over the top of it - the crack will still propagate under the weld

i reckon at either end of the crack you may have to stop drill (small 3mm hole) to prevent it spreading then maybe grind some material away and fill with some weld.

i bet a new sump is a limb and a vital organ?

I've heard that they've gone down to being just two limbs now... with the credit crunch 'n' all.

Hi, managed to get it TIG welded in the end. I'll buy a new sump eventually, but right now I just want to get my bus running- which will be happening in the morning.

For the record, a new alloy sump is £240 from VW!
