itll be a beetle or mk3.5/cabriolet 2.0 head that u will need to source for the conversion.ideally u could use the 2.0 to start with,cam and a lot of headwork on the 2.0 then run on bike carbs shoudl net u 140hp in theory.This is what i had been looking to do but changed plans now.

i cba with ike carbss as the drain the consumption, but i heard ITB is great on fuel consumption nd an overall bette ugrade in power as then u can boost the fuel pressuure

believe it or not they are not that bad,bike carbs are more like throttle bodies and arent bad at all,my flatmate has 2.0 16v on carbs and its not bad at all to be fair. certain 2.0rs are crossflow but i think only beetles and convertibles.8v will be ace

Mk4 2.0 8vs, Beetles etc. are crossflows, or imported Mk3s "ABA" engine code.

To be honest there doesn't seem to be a great answer online. Some people say they would, some say they wouldn't. I couldn't find a proper answer to be honest.

Why don't you just get a port and polished head, high lift cam for your engine?

yea,, my over all plan is to

2litre bottom end
full stainles straiht through exaust
(if it fits then the crossflow head, and then take it to tsr to get it ported and polished)
272 degree fast road cam
individual throttle bodies running on a high pressure fuel rail
then an emerald ecu if i find the money lol

personally i would also stick in vauxhall 2.0 16v xe engine code white injectors,they really sort the fuelling on the 8v when tuned up a little which work well on digifant,i would never take anything to tsr personally.My friend has a g60 fire and ice with inlet manifold and head from tsr, and i dont want to offend anyone but to look at not that good.check my other posts and you will find a local,cheaper lad whos a good friend of mine to do a head for you if you like,well proven on vauxhall engines and is now sorting my friends g60.ill have him do me a head when i come into cash possibly vr6 . Let us know how u get on

how much you recon a polished and ported head would cost from your m8 ???

ill giv him a bell,well tbh he will be at my house in bout half hour.he got a lot of rep on vauxhall forums.hes always got lots on.8v will obviously be cheaper than usual 16v how much is tsr head?i know second hand ones go for 150quid ish

there is a guy who used to work for TSR before they went bust doing heads - apparently he now subcontracts for the new owners, dependant on what you want i can get a price for you, think he does bench flow figures with the heads he does too so you can see the improvement in paper.

with the pb head it really is best to get someone who knows the head well to do the work!!

TSR isnt what they used to be. I think they charge around 700-900 for a head. You could get it done locally for £200-£300. The head off my Mk2 is the L.R Barnes in Menai Bridge getting ported and polished alot cheaper than TSR.

anyone know the power gains from porting and polishing then ?

a g60 turbo manifold will fit the 8v
but instead of fiddling with lo compression pistons, would it be possible to use the 2mm plate trick in order to get a lower compression ratio??

Cam, stainless manifold and ported and polished head your looking 15-25bhp on an 8v GTI.

id go the abf way myself - if done right, with a donor you could do it virtually for free by selling bits off the donor..

2.0 block is easy to come by cheap,1800 head on 2.0 is best but needs headwork and enlarging valves for serious power but that is expensive,but a normal polished and matched head/inlet and a cam can be had cheapish,u dont want to spoil the carachter of the 8v so a mild one should be good,8v engines need uprated plugs and leads and injectors,together with a good exhaust aswell should net 135-140 set up properly with loads of torque and driveability.

so basically buy a cheap mk3 gti 16v nd strip nd sell it

id tend to agree with anthony really as abfs really do go well in mk2s,it probably is the cheapest way to get big power

a rusty one, not a cheap one - shouldn't be too hard to find

You'd be pushed to get a ABF for £350, plus all the little thing you'll need to buy when doing the engine swap will soon add up.
