Should i sell??

Hi everyone a problem has just come up where i can't afford to run the golf anymore! every week is a struggle to pay my way towards the house etc and my Gf and I are arguing wondering where my money's going!!

it's the car!! i'm not buying anuthing for it it's just the running cost!!

so i'm debating on selling it.......or if anyone knows of someone whould like to swap it for something, been offered a mk4 polo aready but it's a little 1ltre with 120K on it......

someone shed some light!!!

Well i've been offered a little mk4 6n 1.0litre! It's got 120k on the clock in a salmon red colour and a few bits of lacker peel! But he said i could keep my wheels and we have a straight swap? I'd consider anything really! Under 1.4! Thanks for the comments guys

I thought that, but my golf needs mot/tax,new rear beam needs to be put on, and it has over 166k and that's when the clock last worked! lol i just don't know what to do? Should i go diesel? Lol

Hmmm, Diesal would be good, what about a 1.3 MK2 Golf Driver, theres a guy near me with one for sale looks pretty clean to be honest, Like a metallic grey colour, steelies debadged grill and ive heard it running, thing he may have done a cambelt change

no!! running right you should see 35mpg, a 1 litre polo you will see about the same.

insurance, ummm i reckon the same ish (you aint a spring chicken are you!?)

the only difference is the tax - which to be honest isnt much.


get up a spread sheet -assuming you are swapping your car list:-

insurance
maintenance cost - i am assuming by you saying you dont spend on the car it is reliable, better the devil you know in my book.

unless your thinking about a diesel or extremely efficient petrol you wont see many benefits from changing, just ease your loud pedal foot off slightly and adhere to speed limits and drive a lot smoother.

ive just had 370 miles from 12.5 gallons in a vr6 = 29.6mpg - so if you are getting less you need to address it - i used to regularly see 38-41 out of my old 8v.

can you explain a bit further as to exactly why you think its like a big sponge??

to add to this a 1.8 EFI engine would be much more effiecient than a 1.3 carb - ask mart!

Think it's because all of the work needed to do on it and tax! I'm paying 54 a month on insurance and around 40 on fuel a week! And that's sensible driving! I don't know, i keep looking at the car and i don't want to let it go, and i don't wanna have to move home! That looks like it'll happen soon, we can't afford to live here! I'm filling the coolant container every month and a half too! Headgasket?

coolant every month - headgasket no..... its not excessive... every half hour would be.

have you priced up insurance on the cheaper cars you are looking at?

maybe reduce your driving to only work and back - no jolly`s.

fuel is todays evil

I travel 20minutes to work and back 5 days a week. Then weekends i work no sunday so saturday i'll drive to bangor and back which is 5 minutes away from my house! I need a better payed job, or another one! I have checker insurance, 27.50 a month for the 1 litre polo! That's stupidly cheap! but i can't understand i went to birmingham and back on slightly over half tank!

oh yes you can see 350 to a tank.

i used to get from rhyl to Aberdeen 410 miles in my 8v (obviously the car was on fumes when at aberdeen).

Yeah, the only way you would save really is to get a little diesel. Mrs used to have a 1.4 6n an i wernt all that cheap to run. Shame to loose the golf tho.

i used to get between 350 and 400 miles to a tank in my mk2 8v. i thought that was well cheap to run.

Last throttle body i had a full tank (£25-£30ish) would only last about 150. even after the leaking tank had been fixed, now £15 sees me to 120-130odd miles in the polo despite running richer than the queen with a dose of the shits.

Would like to see me get this with the bike carbs on and fully set-up.

i was speaking to some old boy earlier - he had a mk2 8v and a mk3 vr...

31mpg out of the vr same as me - driven like it shouldn`t (eg very carefully and slow)

mk2 8v - he said he could get 43-46mpg (again driven in no rush)

he was from wrexham so kinda took it with a pinch of salt like but it could be true
