| Welcome
Seems a weird conversion
A g40 is 114bhp from standard and a gti is 123bhp
But surely a gti engine should be able to get near the 150bhp to 160bhp mark? with a similar amount of work and it's gonna be a lot more reliable and less mantainence than a g40 lump, what with charger rebuilds etc
Also I bet it's a bitch to insure assuming it's down on the log book as what it is and all above board
Do engine conversions have to be valued independantly? Was never sure on that or do you just tell them, suppose it depends on the company
Maybe a 1.8t conversion could have worked better?

Maybe a 1.8t conversion could have worked better? a tuned up G40 engine will definitely be quicker than a tuned up GTi engine. VW had gotten pretty much the most they could out of the GTi engine, tuning it up more only puts more strain on the already crappy gearbox.

| yeah Cymru a g40 engine will be more powerful
But I'm saying it won't be as reliable and doesn't seem worth the price it would have cost foe the conversion as you sacrifice reliability and running costs go up etc
And a gti engine with a good amount of work would still be reliable (depending how hard you drive) and you don't have to worry about charger rebuilds and that. And it would still be at a more than respectable power
I just meant given the choice I know what I'd do is all

It struggles to cope with the standard 125bhp as it is which is a shame. They're great cars bar the damn gearbox problems!

| Welcome, sounds like a good conversion.
I believe that the G40 engine is also lighter than the GTI one and as the gearboxes on the mk3 G40 are practically perfect (unlike the chocolate ones of later models) they are also practically indestructible.
G40's in stock condition are reliable as hell, but like any car they start to loose reliability after modding.
