Well for speed a mk1 1.8 gti will be the best i think and you will get a minter for that sort of money as well as some left over.
A lupo gti is gonna be pretty close to that tho and has the 'rare' appeal and having fewer problems to sort out as its newer leaving your cash to go on mods (lupo is also only group 11 insurance). It will cain your 5k budget tho!
A caddy or a jetta would be pretty cheap to mod and run (i personally would'nt want a caddy for my main car tho).

my 2p anyway Very Happy

Edit to say; 1.8 gti is 112bhp and Lupo gti is 123bhp but the golf is a bit lighter so they would be pretty evenly matched, there is also more scope to tune a mk1 engine.

i'm a bigger fan of the older a dubs, so if i had some spare cash, id be on the mk1 golf/caddy/jetta look out!!! but hey, everyones got their own taste, try and figure out what really floats YOUR boat, and go for it. good luck, and keep us informed!
